Why I have so many browsers

Do I really need more than one browser to use?. Actually, I use Mozilla Firefox for my main browser, but since I have 2 gmail account, I need to open it in separate browser (so I don't have to logout and login for each account). The second browser is also from Mozilla, that is SeaMonkey. I use seamonkey because I need the composer and to pop gmail. I used to pop my mail from Thunderbird, but I think now Seamonkey is enough for me.

The third browser is Opera. I'm using it to open some site that need other google acount too. (for my boyfriend). I almost forget, in the windows there already Internet Explorer, I never use that until my internet banking page only can open in IE. I already ask my bank to improve their program so I don't need IE in the future.

I like mozila browsers, and not feel safe when using IE :(. Anyway, mozilla browsers available for my windows and fedora platform.

Free Download Manager

It's very clear to us from the name of the software, this is a download accelerator and manager and it is absolutely free! Using this software product I can easily download a list of files even my internet speed is not very fast and not reliable.

FDM can resume broken downloads. So I don't have to start the downloading process from the very beginning after casual interruption, this feature is very useful for me. I can resume unfinished download from the moment when it was interrupted (this program warns me if resuming isn't supported by the servers)

I just found out that FDM has feature to download the whole web sites from the remote server. I can adjust FDM to download files with the extensions you have specified. I remember those old days when I use 2 different software to do those 2 jobs.

Anyway, FDM only works on Windows.

Software List on Windows (not complete yet)

These are the windows software I installed on my Acer. Since I dated with an open source contributor, I only use freeware or open source software. At first, it feel weird, but now sometimes freeware and open source software a lot better than the proprietary one.

This list not complete yet, i'll update it later

  1. Softwares for enjoying the Internet:
  • Browser : 3 From Mozilla ( Firefox, Flock and Sea Monkey), Opera Browser and Internet Explorer. Why I need many browsers? Because I have more than 1 account Gmail to open, and I’m too lazy to sign out and sign in everytime I want to read emails. IE is almost never used, and since there’s extension of Firefox to render some pages using IE on Firefox, maybe I’ll never use it anymore J
  • Download manager : Free Download Manager, once I used Getright, but since I found FDM say goodbye to Getright. With this software I can split my download file and if the connection getting slow or I want to turn of my computer, I could stop the process and continue later (but some server cannot be continue).
  • Instant Messaging : Gaim. I was a chatter, once I installed ICQ, YM and MSN on my old pc, and now with Gaim I can login with a single application. But those days are over, now I only use Gaim for YM only.
  • Voice Over IP : Barablu, Skype, Voip Buster. I still don’t decide which one the best, just try it last week, unfortunately my internet speed not very reliable. Sometimes it good, manytimes not good :(
  • FTP Clients: Putty
  1. Sofwares for Office Productivity
  • Text Editor: Emacs beside Notepad, Emacs support highlighting syntax.
  • Read PDF : Adobe Acrobat Reader, FoxItReader
  • Make PDF Documents : PDFWriter
  • Blogging : W.bloggar
  1. Software for Entertainment / Multimedia
  • Video : VLC beside Windows Media Player
  • Music : iTunes, I don’t have ipod yet, but I just prepare to have it anytime soon :) (maybe you want to give me an ipod? :) )
  • Picasa : To organize my photos
  1. Antivirus : Avast Home Edition, always updated if I connected to Internet

Avast and W.bloggar already told, the rest will come as soon as possible.

Anti Virus : Avast

Today I can't update my antivirus since the registration date is reached 1 year. I'm using avast for my Acer. I alway update the antiviruses' database regularly. There's two ways to update avast antivirus database, downloaded it separately or update incrementally. When I don't have Interenet Connection from home usually I downloaded it from Campuss. The update come as executable files. The update size getting bigger everyday (since the database getting larger too).

My experience using avast is my Windows-XP never got infected. When there's brontok attack in Indonesia, avast never failed to detect it, so I still saved till now. Well, the best thing from Avast is, it's free for Home Users.

That's it, if u need a free antiviruses and powerfull and easy to update, I'm sure Avast is the one. All you have to do is registered every year (it's not so hard I guess).
